Aircraft Electromagnetic Certification Workshop, 3-6 June, 2014

Gavin Barber, Capability Lead – HIRF, DEW & E3, QinetiQ Weapons Division

Once again QinetiQ will deliver its Aircraft Electromagnetic Certification Workshop (AECW) in June. We’re the only organisation in the UK to offer this workshop and over the past 15 years, industry delegates from across the world have attended the respected four-day course to learn the techniques and test methods necessary to achieve both commercial aircraft certification and support military aircraft Release to Service (RTS).

Magnetic interference is generally damaging to electronic equipment, and at higher energy levels a powerful EM event, such as a lightning strike, can damage aircraft. As world-leading providers of consultancy and testing services, QinetiQ’s high-intensity radiated field capability group supports aircraft manufacturers to gain essential regulatory approvals for all aspects of Electromagnetic (EM) clearance.

The workshop, which will be held at our Farnborough site from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 June, is intended for anyone who requires a working knowledge of aircraft development and certification programmes. It addresses equipment level testing, full aircraft certification processes, HIRF test methods and direct/indirect lightning effects.

To ensure each delegate receives the most comprehensive and wide-ranging content, we complement our own in-house expertise with specialists from industry, including:

  • NIAR: Civil Aircraft protection and maintenance
  • Cobham Technical Services: Lightning testing and protection
  • CAA: Aircraft Certification processes
  • Prof. Nigel Carter (Consultant):Commercial standards and committees
  • BAE Systems: Military Aircraft hardening/protection methods

Comprising a well-established balance between classroom-based interactive sessions and practical demonstrations, the workshop provides a rounded understanding of full aircraft certification processes and chamber-based equipment level testing.
